Godly Husbands & Wives

The health of a church, and the health of a society, can be gauged by the health of its marriages. When husbands and wives are at odds with one another, the very fabric of society can break down. But when husbands and wives love and honor one another, good things happen.

St. John Chrysostom said, “there is no relationship between man and man so close as that between man and wife, if they be joined together as they should be . . . nothing whatever is more precious than to be . . . loved by a wife and to love her.”

As Scripture says,

“There are three things beautiful to see, and they are beautiful before the Lord and men: The harmony of brothers, friendship between neighbors, and a wife and husband well-adjusted together.” (Sirach 25:1)

Scripture provides helpful guidance for building a marriage which pleases God:

Christian Men Love Their Wives

“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word . . . So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself.” (Ephesians 5:25-28)

Christian Women Respect Their Husbands

“let the wife see that she respects her husband.”
(Ephesians 5:33b)

Christian Men Honor Their Wives

“Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.” (1 Peter 3:7)

Christian Women Obey Their Husbands

“admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed.” (Titus 2:4-5)

Christian Men Support Their Families

“But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” (1 Timothy 5:8)

“There is wrath, insolence, and great shame
when a wife supports her husband.” (Sirach 25:21)

Christian Women Are Good Housekeepers and Cooks

“admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed.” (Titus 2:4-5)

“A wife’s grace will delight her husband,
And her skill will put fat on his bones.” (Sirach 26:13)

“Like the sun rising in the Lord’s heaven
is the beauty of a good wife in the ordering of her house.” (Sirach 26:16)

Christian Husbands and Wives Rejoice in Sex

Let your fountain be blessed,
and rejoice in the wife of your youth,
as lovely deer, a graceful doe.
May her breasts satisfy you at all times;
may you be intoxicated always by her love.
(Proverbs 5:18-19)

“my bride, you ravished my heart; You have ravished my heart with one look from your eyes . . . my bride, how beautiful are your breasts. How much more beautiful are your breasts than wine, and the fragrance of your garments than all the spices. Your lips, my bride, drip as the honeycomb; honey and milk are under your tongue; and the fragrance of your garments is as the scent of Lebanon.” (Song of Songs 4:9-11)

“Awake, O north wind, And come, O south wind; blow through my garden and let my spices flow out. Let my beloved come to his garden and eat of its fruits.” (Song of Songs 4:16)

“Make haste, my beloved,
and be like a gazelle
or a young stag . . . ”
(Song of Songs 8:14)

According to Scripture, husbands should:

  • Love their wives
  • Honor their wives
  • Provide for their wives
  • Rejoice in physical marital intimacy

According to Scripture, wives should:

  • Respect their husbands
  • Obey their husbands
  • Be good housekeepers and cooks
  • Rejoice in physical marital intimacy

Think of how blessed a family is when God’s commands are obeyed, and these instructions are put into practice!

  1. Scott says:

    Yes!

I hope you are aware of much of a minority you represent, even among Orthodox Christians in America.

Keep the faith! This kind of teaching falls on deaf ears most of the time, but it is Gods truth.
