Who Do You Really Love?

Many men say they love their wives.

Yet . . .

  • Instead of working hard, they burden their wives with supporting the family.
  • Instead of diligently disciplining their children, they leave it all up to their wives.
  • Instead of speaking kindly and gently with their wives, they speak harshly.
  • Instead of delighting solely in the beauty of one’s wife, they indulge in  sexually explicit magazine photos and internet porn.

Many women say they love their husbands.

Yet . . .

  • Instead of honoring their husbands, they treat them with disrespect.
  • Instead of cleaning daily, they let their husbands come home to a messy house.
  • Instead of having a gentle and quiet spirit, they nag their husbands without mercy.
  • Instead of taking joy in the intimate embrace of one’s husband, they indulge in sexually explicit romance novels, which are the woman’s version of pornography.

Many people say they love Jesus.

Yet . . .

  • Many husbands do not obey Christ’s commands about how to treat their wives.
  • Many wives do not obey Christ’s commands about how to treat their husbands.
  • They fail to have daily family prayer (even though they have time for television).
  • They do not take time to read the Bible (even though they have time for Facebook).
  • They do not worship Jesus at church every Sunday morning.
  • They ignore many of the commands Jesus has given, regarding how to live our lives.

In all of the above examples, what are we going to believe? Are we going to believe what people say, or are we going to believe what people do? Shall we take people at their word, or is the truth revealed by their actions?

In John 14:15, Jesus provides a simple test of love. He says:

“If you love Me, keep My commandments.”
